A Power Outage Battery could be a lifesaver, depending on your situation. Hi guys and thanks for reading, I will explain that in the rest of this article. This will be all about when unexpected things happen, like when the power goes off for a week with zero-degree temps. No water, a foot of snow on the ground. Weird natural things like that, then I will explore not-so-natural things that actually could happen as well.
Uses of a Power Outage Battery
First and foremost, the title kinda says it all. The use of a Power outage battery, is well, to use during a power outage. Have you ever unexpectedly had the power go out and hope it comes back on before the food ruins in the refrigerator? Unfortunately, I’ve been there way too many times.
When that unfortunate occurrence happens, a backup power outage battery could be the difference in saving or losing a refrigerator full of food. I don’t know your story, but where I live in Texas the power has been known to go off on a daily basis. Then, there was that record winter last year where we had no power or water for a week. I’ll get to that in just a moment.
My Worst Power Outage Story
Last winter Texas actually set a record low that has not been broken seen since the 1070s. We are used to wearing short sleeve shirts all through most of the winter. Granted, we get some cold spells that require a jacket, but it never stays cold very long here.
Then, the record winter happened across all the US last year. The power went off for us on day one. It started off with sleet, hail, an ice storm, then quickly turned into a full-blown snowstorm. Now the temps are dropping all the way down to zero degrees with no power to run our heat pump A/C.
Next, we lost running water. The water supply company was also without power, so their pumps quit pumping water to us. Now we are without power and water with the temps falling. It was a pure miracle that when I added on a bedroom to the house I put a propane tank outside with a heater for that bedroom. That was the only warm room in the house.
The Aftermath of Our Power Outage
After that week was over, we finally had power restored. It was off and on at first, but finally came back on like normal. Worst after that was the water problem. As the water began flowing back to our house again, we soon discovered we still didn’t have water in the house.
All the pipes that we left dripping to keep from freezing were frozen solid. See, keeping the pipes dripping will keep them from freezing, but ONLY if you actually have running water. As soon as the water stopped, everything froze solid and there was nothing we could do about it.
Next, the temp starts warming up and the pipes start defrosting. Now we have another problem! All of those frozen pipes are busting from being frozen. So, the temp is back in the ’50s, snow is melting off, we have electricity and heat again, but still no water. I had to shut the meter off at the road until I fixed the broken pipes.
Next problem, Lowes, Home Depot, you name the store, they were all totally sold out of plumbing fittings! That was a bit of a nightmare. The plumbers already cleaned out the stores so the rest of us couldn’t get what we needed. Thankfully my dad and myself have been stocking a lot of fittings just in case. We live 20 miles from town, so keeping things on hand is a must around here.
Now We Introduce the Best Solution to the Problem.
For most people, that solution would likely include a generator, and that’s not a bad idea at all. But, what do you do when it runs out of gas and you have no way to go get more? Well, your up a creek without a paddle at that point. With a foot of snow on the ground here in Texas, travel was not much of an option for most of us. We don’t have tire chains or things like that to drive in snow. It hasn’t snowed like that here in over 30 years.
Your next option, Power Outage Batteries! And let me tell you, they don’t only carry a variety of batteries to suit your needs, they also offer solar panels that will power devices and recharge those batteries. That’s what I’m talking about for an extended power outage or even a camping trip!
I had an electric gate to get in and load/unload at my appliance shop before moving to a home office and going in-home only with repairs. The electric charger I had kept ruining the battery every 6 months or so. Finally, I found a solar panel at an auto parts place of all places to find that. I mounted that and hooded it up and it was still working 2 years later when I moved out of the building.
Power Outage Battery for Preppers
We can’t leave out the preppers, survivalists, or those going off the grid! First, I’ll talk about the doomsday preppers. Did you ever watch any of the Matrix movies? That EMP they used to disable the robots trying to kill them was not just dreamed up for a movie. That is a real thing that you may or may not have heard of, depending on the news source.
EMP stands for Electro Magnetic Pulse. You can Google it and read all about it. To break that down, when detonated, any electrical device in the blast radius will be disabled. That means your phone, car, the electricity grid, everything goes down and is unusable. No, I have not done the research as to how long it would take to get things back up and running, but I still don’t want to play with that.
Not naming countries because I don’t want to get into trouble, but one or more is capable of launching a rocket with an EMP in it that could detonate over the United States right now. Said rocket with EMP would kill power and any electrical devices across 90% of the US. Just think about that for a moment and let it sink in.
Ramifications of an EMP
We already covered the part about any and all electrical devices will be out of commission. Meaning, you will lose electricity, water, phones, and it will disable the computer in your car. That is unless you have a car or truck built before 1980 that doesn’t have a computer in it.
Now we have millions of people that will not survive a week in those conditions. Your food in the refrigerator will spoil within 48 hours. You can’t call anyone, there are no phones now. There is no electricity, no running water. You can’t go to the grocery store or gas station, their power and water is out too and everything is spoiled there as well. What will you do to survive?
Truth be told, over half the population of the US would die within 2 weeks. Granted, us rednecks, country boys, preppers, and survivalists can probably get through it. But, where does that leave the millions that don’t know how to hunt, grow vegetables, purify water, build a fire for heat and cooking.
Next, even if you can hunt, what are you going to do with the meat without a refrigerator? That’s when you have to build a smokehouse to hang your meet in and keep it warm. Now we are going back to pre-electricity times and how things were done back then. How many people could actually do that today?
Next, Defend Yourself!
As said, now you have to defend yourself and your family. If you are industrious and skilled enough to survive, those that are not WILL try to come take what you have. Now you have to be watching every corner of your property for said people that will try and steal your food, and maybe take over and live on your land. Are you prepared for that?
You will need a plan to rotate people out that can keep watch 24/7. Even if they are not comfortable handling a gun, they can quickly wake someone to take care of problems. Mark my words, if that ever happens, all hell will break out with people killing each other just to survive. Enough about that, I’m not going into anymore gorry details there.
