Let’s talk about Liquid Chalk ladies and gentlemen. We all know hand chalk is a major part of so many sports and outdoor activities today, but which one is the best? First, let’s go over the many uses and needs for hand chalk, then we will talk about the Liquid Chalk.
Let’s Talk about Liquid Chalk for Weightlifting
First and foremost, weight lifting comes to mind for me. Being an athlete playing football, basketball, baseball, and running track back in school we had to lift a LOT of weights. There are two options there: gloves or chalk plus gloves. I remember those days of lifting when the bar would rub blisters in my hands that would bleed.
To prevent that from happening, you need some chalk on your hands to keep the bar from slipping in your sweaty palms. Seriously, when you’re dealing with 200 lbs up, a sweaty palm is NOT GOOD with a bar that can roll and twist, depending on the lift you are doing. Granted, there may not be much room to roll in a bench press or dead lift, but just think about a power clean. You start with a bar on the ground much like a dead lift, but end with that bar face level. There is NO way to avoid some slip and roll of the bar on that exercise!
Chalk it up!
Yeah, gloves are good, but they get awful sweaty and hot when your lifting. Who wants to put gloves on and take them off for your hands to dry out in between every set? That can get to be a major pain in the rear! How many times have you ever been in a weight room working out? I don’t know about you, but I don’t waste time with gloves. Too much time and trouble.
Back in high school, I was 6’3″ and 170 lbs. I benched 225 lbs and dead lifted 350 lbs. Not too bad for a scrawny red neck, right? Sadly, we didn’t even have chalk of any kind back then. I went to a small county school that was still growing at the time. Haha! When I first started, Kindergarten through 12th was all in the same building!! Granted, the school has grown massively since then to a MUCH larger facility with a separate elementary and high school.
Sorry, got a little off-topic telling my old high school stories. Where were we? It’s time to talk about Liquid Chalk vs Powder Chalk. I know, everyone is waiting to know how that plays out for rock climbing, but I will get to that soon enough.
Liquid Chalk vs Powder Chalk
To get right into it, powder chalk works great but makes a HUGE mess when you get a group of guys (or even women) in the locker room or gym. There is NO avoiding it getting all over the floor no matter what you do. Let’s face it, powder is just messy! Who could disagree?
Now, let’s talk liquid. You squeeze a dime-size dollop into your palm and rub it in-between both hands. Give it 10-15 seconds to dry and you’re ready to go! Awesome right? No more mess, no more waste. And here is the best part, the Liquid will NOT wear off like the powder does! You can do set after set without a worry about your hands slipping on the bar and rubbing those painful blisters.
Now to Rock Climbing!!
Oh, who doesn’t love that sport?? Granted, I have never done the mountain type rock climbing, I only have experience on the 30ish foot walls with a safety rope attached. Yes, my long arms and legs gives me an advantage on those indoor climbing ranges, but slippery hands can kill that climb halfway up in a heartbeat. It really sucks getting halfway up, leaping to the next handhold, and falling because my hand slipped off from all the sweat from climbing!
Again, we go back to Liquid vs Powder. And again, you can choose the powder that may wear off halfway up your climb, or choose the liquid that will stick to your hands and be there all the way back down, That looks like an easy decision to me, how about you? Do you want powder that you know will be gone halfway up, or liquid that will stick to you all the way up and back down??
In conclusion, a little bit more about me and my familly.
I’m not sure why I’m sharing this, other than to expand on what I’ve done already here today. I’m happily married for 18 years with a step-daughter I got with the deal, and I love her to death. Next, we had a daughter that is 18 now. In between, we had one we lost because the was no heartbeat. Next, comes our youngest, and my only son.
At a doctor’s appointment, he said my wife’s blood pressure was too high to continue the pregnancy. The only option was to make her “not pregnant”, to save her life. So, my son was born several weeks early and spent several weeks in the NIC-U. That was a VERY trying time for our famillly not being able to bring our child home.
Finally, we both had to spend a night in the hospital with him while they monitored us to be sure we could take care of him when we took him home. Once at home the poor little guy had a monitor with stick-on leaks all over his chest that would go off for no good reason and scare us to death in the middle of the night.
14 years later my little preemie that was in and out of the hospital for the first year of his life is a little taller than me at the age of 14 (I’m 6′ 3″) and outweighs me by 30 lbs or more. Hehe! He still doesn’t want to box with me though! Granted, I am still stronger, but that won’t last long and I don’t want him to figure that one out.
Last, but Not Least.
