Get your Tators Ready for your “Homemade Hamburger”

First, peel your tators and dice them up into french fry size pieces.  Now give them a good wash in the sink with cold water to clean them up.  Most of the recopies I’ve found on the internet will advise you to soak them from three hours to as long as overnight, but I can’t find a difference either way.  I first did about 20 minutes because that’s all the time I had.  The next time I soaked them for a good 3 hours.  They both came out the same for me.

Now select your meat “You won’t believe this till you try it”!

I came across something that is actually in the frozen section, not in the fresh meats.  Yeah, this is hard to believe, but bear with me here.  I found a 12 pack of 100% all-beef hamburger patties that are 80/20 on the fat content, and they are good for a frozen pattie.  You can take these out early enough to thaw, but you can toss them on frozen as well.  Noted, using a fresh beef patty is going to be better, but this is a quick, easy, and budget-friendly way to make a delicious hamburger. If it doesn’t meet my son’s approval, I wouldn’t be posting it here.

Let’s get things ready to Start Cooking

Get your skillet ready for the tators.  Any skillet will work, but cast iron is the best.  Add your shortening or oil (whatever you prefer) and let that start getting hot.  Toss a griddle or skillet down, center it over the heat, and let that start getting hot as well.  Spray it down with some cooking oil.

Now we start cooking!

Gently place the tators into the skillet of hot grease.  BE CAREFULL, it will splatter and pop just a bit.  Let them start cooking for a few minutes because they will take longer than the patties.  Go ahead and toss the hamburgers on the griddle or skillet.

Tend both of these at the same time!  Keep the fries moving in the grease.  Press down on each hamburger pattie for a few seconds so it gets evenly browned.  Roll the fries, press down (gently) on the patties.  After around 8-10 minutes you can flip the burgers.  If they are not ready yet, flip them back over and wait another minute or two.  All the while, keep the fries turning every few minutes in the skillet.  Brown everything to your liking.

I like to have a lightly buttered bun ready to go as soon as I take the patties off.  Place them in the leftover grease on the griddle (or in the skillet) and brown them like you would a grilled cheese.  Keep you spatula greasy and press down gently on the top of the buns.  This will create an incredible greasy mess when you eat the burger, but it’s an incredible taste and well worth it!

Now we fix the burger and get ready to eat!

If you like cheese, now is the time.  Slap a slice of your favorite between the hot bun and the hot pattie so it can melt just a little.  Add your veggies of choice and sauce to the top of the bun, assemble, and be amazed at what you can do with a frozen pattie!  Get ready to have the best homemade hamburger you have ever had!  Serve and enjoy!
